Match reports Saturday 14th March

L1
Doncaster L1 v Stokesley
0 : 2

Doncaster Ladies 1s suffered a tough 2–0 defeat against Stokesley on Saturday, a result that confirms a top-three finish for the season.
The girls worked hard throughout against a well-drilled Stokesley side who play a slightly different style of hockey. Their direct approach, including long outlet balls and experienced decision-making in possession, proved difficult for Doncaster to deal with at times.
Despite this, Doncaster showed plenty of quality in their own play. The team moved the ball well across the pitch and began to grow into the game as it progressed. In the final quarter especially, Doncaster pushed hard in search of a goal and created several promising moments. On another day, a 2–1 score line might have been a fairer reflection of the contest.
There were strong individual performances across the pitch. Annabel delivered arguably her best performance of the season, while Sarah was excellent in her distribution and transfer play from the back.
With York securing a win elsewhere, the league standings now leave Doncaster competing with Stokesley for second or third place. Everything will come down to the final weekend of the season, where Doncaster take on Leeds with second place still up for grabs.
One final push remains.

L2
Wakefield v Doncaster L2
0 :0

Doncaster Hockey Club Ladies 2s played out a hard-fought 0–0 draw against Wakefield in a game that was dominated by the away side.
Doncaster created numerous chances throughout the match and won several short corners, applying constant pressure in Wakefield’s half. Despite some excellent attacking play and sustained possession, the ball just wouldn’t find the back of the net. Wakefield spent much of the game defending as Doncaster controlled the play and limited their opportunities. Although the goals didn’t come, it was a strong performance from Doncaster Ladies 2s who were unlucky not to take all three points.

L3
Horncastle v Doncaster L3
9 : 1

Doncaster Ladies 3s wrapped up their season with a tough fixture against Horncastle, ultimately falling to a 9–1 defeat in the final game of the campaign.
Horncastle started strongly, putting Doncaster under pressure early and converting several chances in the first half. Despite determined defending and hard work across the pitch, Doncaster went into the break trailing after Horncastle capitalised on their attacking momentum.
The second half saw renewed energy from Doncaster, who pushed forward with greater intent. Their efforts were rewarded when Woody found the back of the net, scoring Doncaster’s only goal of the match and giving the team a well-deserved moment to celebrate. The goal lifted spirits as the side continued to battle despite Horncastle extending their lead.
Throughout the game, there were standout performances from several players who kept working hard until the final whistle. Joint Player of the Match honours went to Esther and Woody for their outstanding effort and impact on the game, with both players showing determination and leadership during a challenging match.
While the score line wasn’t the result Doncaster Ladies 3s were hoping for, the team showed resilience and teamwork in their final outing of the season and will look to build on the positives next season.

M2
Harrogate 1 v Doncaster M2
2 : 2

Doncaster 2s travelled to face Harrogate 1s knowing that a result could prove vital in our survival in the YNE premier league.
We believed points were there to be taken and that belief showed from the very start. Doncaster began on the front foot, moving the ball well and creating several early chances. The pressure eventually paid off when Faerber stepped up to a penalty corner and fired a low strike into the bottom left corner to give Doncaster a deserved 0-1 lead.
We continued to push and Faerber soon earned another huge opportunity after winning a penalty stroke. Unfortunately, a strong save from the Harrogate keeper denied the chance to double the lead, meaning Doncaster went into the second quarter still ahead but only by the single goal.
Harrogate responded after the break. A quick breakaway caught Doncaster out and the home side capitalised, bringing the game level at 1-1.
Despite the setback, Doncaster stuck to their game plan and continued to create chances. The pressure built throughout the half, but the final touch just wouldn’t quite fall our way. That was until Gunning received a loose ball at the top of the D and unleashed a tomahawk (hooked-chip-mishit) that looped over the goalkeeper and into the net to restore Doncaster’s lead at 1-2.
However, the advantage didn’t last long. A lapse in readiness immediately after the restart allowed Harrogate to respond quickly and equalise once again, bringing the score to 2-2.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but the score remained level at the final whistle. While it may not have been the victory we had hoped for, the hard-fought point proved hugely significant and has secured the 2s’ survival in this competitive league.
Going into this fixture, Donny needed just a point to confirm survival in the YNE premier league.

M3
Doncaster M3 v Harrogate 2
0 : 5

With Harrogate sitting top of the table, a win for them would guarantee them being league champions.
Having played well at Harrogate, Doncaster we determined to give them a game and make them earn the league title.
Even after a strong start from Doncaster, it take take long for the visitors to show their dominance. Some unlucky goals, and some well worked set pieces saw the score at half time 4-0 to Harrogate.
Doncaster regrouped and were still looking to make an impact in the game. Even after some close chances, Doncaster just couldn’t find the back of the net. A better second half with only one conceded meant it finished 5-0. A tough game against a strong opposition although the score line flattered the visitors somewhat as it was a closer game than the score suggests.

M4
Huddersfield Dragons v Doncaster M4
5 : 2

Doncaster 4s made the long drive to Huddersfield this week for their penultimate game of the season, hoping to finish the campaign strongly with just two matches remaining.
The game proved to be an eventful and entertaining contest, with plenty of action at both ends of the pitch. Doncaster produced some good passages of hockey throughout the match, creating chances and applying pressure, particularly through several short corners. The match also saw two penalty flicks awarded, adding further drama to an already lively encounter.
In one of the more unusual moments of the afternoon, a player had to be removed from the pitch after it was discovered he had already played a game earlier that day.
Despite Doncaster’s positive play and attacking intent, the result ultimately went the way of Huddersfield, who secured a 5–2 victory. Doncaster’s goals came from Scott and Macca, who both found the net during an open, end-to-end game.
With the season now nearing its conclusion, Doncaster 4s have just one match remaining and will be looking to finish the campaign on a high.

M5
Doncaster M5 v City of York 6
0: 2

Clinical York Edge Out Doncaster 5s in Tightly Contested Battle for Third (2-0)
In a high-stakes clash with third place on the line, Doncaster Men's 5th team fell 2-0 to a seasoned York side. The final score line tells a story of ruthless efficiency rather than outright dominance, as York capitalized on their rare chances in what was otherwise a gritty, evenly matched affair.
The Midfield Battle
Doncaster’s usual rhythm was disrupted early on. Known for a fluid, established passing game that has dismantled teams in the past, Doncaster struggled to dictate the tempo. Despite the team's best efforts to pull the strings in the centre of the pitch, a physically strong and well-organized York outfit pressed intelligently. This made it incredibly difficult for Doncaster to settle into their familiar routines and link up through the middle.
The Left-Wing Threat
Despite the disjointed midfield play, Doncaster found a clear tactical advantage down the left flank. Driven by the relentless energy of O Wade, Doncaster carved out promising opportunities and pinned York back, putting the visitors under sustained pressure. However, York’s defensive unit showed their experience—they bent but never broke, holding firm to deny Doncaster the final product their build-up play warranted.
The Decisive Margins
Ultimately, this game came down to ruthlessness in the final third. In a match starved of clear-cut opportunities for either side, York proved decisive. They absorbed Doncaster's left-sided attacks and buried the few chances that fell their way on the counter, leaving the Doncaster defence and keeper with little chance.
Man of the Match: O Wade
A standout performance in a tough fixture goes to O Wade. Even as the team struggled to find its usual rhythm, Wade's work rate, resilience, and constant drive down the left side kept Doncaster in the fight right up to the final whistle.
The Verdict
It’s a tough result to swallow in a battle for third, but it was a classic case of a veteran team managing the game and executing when it mattered most. Doncaster can take heart from an evenly matched performance and relentless wide pressure, but York’s defensive solidity and clinical edge ultimately sealed the points.

Match report - Sunday 15th March

M1
Sheffield v Doncaster M1
2 : 1

Sheffield away is always a fixture you look out for in the season, and while a few of the Doncaster players (and manager) had a turbulent week at the races, spirits were high ahead of push back at Abbeydale.
An annoying habit that we’ve fallen into in the last few weeks is starting games slowly, and
frustratingly, that rang true again this week. Sheffield started on top, and got their reward of an early goal. The game was played at a decent pace, with chances coming for both teams, and while we weren’t at our best, we were still very much in the game at half-time trailing 1-0.
The second half started much the same - mistakes from Doncaster defensively allowed Sheffield to double their lead from a PCA. Strangely, when the game seemed to have slipped from Doncaster’s grasp was the time when we were at our best.
We made it 2-1 with about 13mins to go through a converted PCA, and in the final knockings of the game, Doncaster were the better side. Frustratingly, chances came and went and we couldn’t quite do enough to get on level terms, despite our best efforts.
