Doncaster’s Tom Wheeldon represents England at U18 Eight Nations in Spain

Doncaster U18 player Tom Wheeldon helped England secure fifth place after a demanding week of international hockey in Granada.

Doncaster’s Tom Wheeldon proudly represented England at the U18 Eight Nations tournament held in Granada, Spain, last week, marking another major milestone in an outstanding year of international hockey.
Wheeldon was once again selected to represent his country and featured throughout the competition, which brought together some of the strongest youth sides in the game. England faced a tough opening challenge against hosts Spain, narrowly losing 2-1 in a closely contested match that could easily have swung in England’s favour.
The squad then battled to a draw against the Netherlands, but England were edged out after shuffles, leaving them on the wrong side of another fine-margin result. Despite the setbacks, the team produced some brilliant passages of play and showed outstanding effort in challenging temperatures.
Those early results placed England in the lower play-offs, where the side responded strongly. Comfortable victories over Scotland and Canada set up a fifth/sixth place play-off against a determined Ireland team.
England finished the tournament on a high, delivering a united and confident team performance to beat Ireland 4-2 and secure fifth place overall.
Although the final placing was not the result the squad had hoped for, the tournament proved to be an inspiring and unforgettable experience for Wheeldon. Having been selected for every tournament and played in every game this year, his progress has been a proud achievement for both club and country.
For Tom, the opportunity to pull on an England shirt on the international stage has been, in his own words, “a dream come true”.
