M2 survive in YNE Premier division

Anna Clish29 Mar - 09:29

Grit and determination win the day!

With the 2s final game played away at Leeds, we are proud to confirm survival in the YNE
Premier Division.
Just four seasons ago, we struggled to stay up in the YNE Division 1 finishing just outside
the relegation zone. The following season saw a complete turn around with a mixture of
experience and youth inspiring a great season that saw the lads finish 3rd, one spot from
promotion. Then last year saw the 2s do something no Donny second team has done for
many years as we secured promotion to the league below our 1s. We knew it wouldn’t be an easy year, harder games and losing some key players to university and the first XI would
prove a challenge. However a 4-0 win in our first game showed the league we weren’t a
team that would be easy to beat.
Fast-forward to the Christmas break and we sat 3rd bottom, level on points with Leeds Adel, who were in a relegation spot and had just beat us 3-2 with a heart breaking last-second winner. The coaching staff (Hilditch) worked over Christmas to adapt our style of play in an attempt to stay up. The first game back with this new style saw us lose 10-0 to York 1s, not an ideal start. Despite that game, we went on to play Durham City 1s, Lindum 2s, and Wakefield 1s, taking a much needed 7 points. A few unfortunate results followed against Sheff Bankers 1s, Whitley Bay & Tynemouth 1s and Durham Uni 3s but we were still 6 points ahead of the bottom 2 sides with only 2 games remaining.
We travelled to Harrogate for our penultimate game of the season. Full time score 2-2. A
point was enough to secure safety. The last game of the season was played at Weetwood, in which we lost 6-2 to a strong Leeds side, but allowed us to celebrate survival in the league.
A huge congratulations to the 2s lads for their effort over the season!
