Junior / Development Round up - 3rd / 4th October

Anna Clish

See how our junior players got on this weekend.

Saturday 3rd October

D2
Slazengers v Doncaster D2
0 : 0
Saturday saw us head away to Slazengers in Wakefield for our development game, and we arrived to glorious sunshine and high hopes that the weather might cheer our opposition friends up a little.
Sadly… it didn’t.
From the first whistle, we played with grit, determination and plenty of energy. We spent large parts of the game camped in their half, peppering their goal and making sure the pressure never really let up.
We defended from the front brilliantly, listening to the key instructions and pressing their players whenever they tried to play out. Our energy levels and fitness stayed high throughout, and some excellent paired tackling created plenty of attacking opportunities. We also won more short corners than our opponents, showing just how much pressure we were putting them under.
When Slazengers did manage to break through, we worked brilliantly as units, covering for each other and showing some excellent defensive discipline. And when they did get through, we had quality goalkeeping behind us to keep things secure.
Player performances
Lilly – Solid goalkeeping in her second game of the day, keeping a clear focus and dealing confidently with everything that came her way.
Elsie – Some really solid tackling, along with noticeably more composure when she had the ball.
Oliver H – Great running, good distribution and excellent work tracking back to help the team.
Euan – His confidence continues to grow, and his positioning was really good throughout.
Rhys – Top-class stick skills and one of the goal threats of the day.
Evie – Full of energy, strong tackling and excellent team play from start to finish.
Beth S – What an engine! She simply never stopped running and combined that work rate with fantastic team play.
Will - Direct dribbling, clear attacking runs and a real willingness to take the game forward.
Caspar – High energy throughout, combined with some really composed stick skills.
Matilda H – Energetic, made clear attacking runs and was excellent at starting that first line of defence.
Percy – Fearless in the tackle and showed good positional play wherever he was asked to play.
So… how was it 0–0?
Honestly, it should have been a win for us.
The scoreline certainly doesn't tell the story of the game. We created chances, dominated territory, pressed brilliantly, tackled in pairs and worked incredibly hard for each other. The finishing just didn't quite match the rest of the performance this time.
And let's not forget the parents on the sideline! They were willing you to score far more than you probably realised and were desperate for you to show their coach exactly what a great team looks like.
You absolutely did that.
A huge well done to every one of you. You should all be really proud of that performance.
Next week, we're back on the road as we head to Sheffield Bankers.
Come and join us!

Sunday 5th October

Home:
Doncaster U14G v Kingston Upon Hull
0 : 2
A tight game, with both sides having some early chances in the Autumn sunshine. Doncaster had sustained periods of pressure in the first half whilst Hull remained dangerous on the break but neither side could find the net, and it remained 0-0 at half time.
Hull took the lead early in the second half with a well worked goal, and as the game stretched in the final quarter, they added second goal. Doncaster had multiple chances to score, but the Hull goalkeeper was on good form and managed to keep everything out.
A good team performance, and some great link up play in the midfield and down the wings. Doncaster team was made up of six U12 girls playing up an age group, and all the girls put in a huge effort, but unfortunately the scoreline doesn’t reflect the effort or chances they made.

Doncaster U14B v Leeds
9 : 1

Doncaster U16G v Repton
0 : 8
First game of the season with a number of the girls playing together for the first time.
A challenging game against a well drilled team from Repton.
4 goals against the girls in each half. A number of the goals came from short corners. Plenty for our girls to work on for next week but they stayed cheerful and enjoyed match teas together in the sun.

Wakefield v Doncaster U14B
4 : 0

Timperley v Doncaster U14G
1 : 4
Doncaster produced an excellent team performance away at Timperley, creating chances throughout the game and making the most of a series of dangerous short corners to secure a well-deserved 4-1 victory.
Doncaster started strongly and threatened from the opening minutes. An early short corner saw a powerful effort well saved by the Timperley goalkeeper, who was soon called into action again as Doncaster continued to press. The breakthrough came after just under six minutes when Louisa Reynolds found the net from open play to give Doncaster a deserved lead.
The attacking pressure continued, with further saves denying Doncaster before Bella Holgate doubled the advantage just two minutes later. Doncaster dominated possession and territory, creating chances from open play and a succession of short corners that repeatedly tested the home defence. One particularly well-worked routine even resulted in the ball finding the net, only for the goal to be disallowed.
Doncaster remained in control for much of the first half. The defence dealt well with Timperley's limited attacking opportunities, while the midfield and forwards continued to create openings. The third goal arrived from a short corner midway through the half, with Bella converting after another well-executed set-piece routine. Further efforts either flashed wide or were denied by the goalkeeper, but Doncaster headed into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.
The second half began with more Doncaster pressure. A flurry of attacking play inside the opening five minutes created several opportunities, while consecutive short corners kept Timperley pinned inside their own circle. Doncaster's dominance was rewarded again when Bella completed her hat-trick from another short-corner routine to extend the lead to 4-0.
Timperley responded with a quick counter-attack midway through the half to pull a goal back, but Doncaster continued to look the more dangerous side. A driven ball across the face of goal almost created another scoring opportunity, a later effort struck the post, and several further short corners forced the Timperley goalkeeper into a number of important saves.
Despite two green cards in the second half, Doncaster remained composed and controlled the closing stages to secure an impressive 4-1 away victory. Strong defending, sustained attacking pressure and excellent execution from short corners proved the difference in a deserved team win.
A strong all-round team performance from Doncaster, with every player contributing to an excellent away victory.
