Brigg 3 v DHC M5
3 - 3
Men’s 5th team travelled to Brigg for the return fixture with their 3’s. having been beaten by a second half hat-trick that took the game away from us at home the team were determined not to repeat this capitulation away from home.
Doncaster took a strong 16 away from home and the game began well with evenly matched teams enjoying opportunities at either end. We welcomed H Tailor to the club and a debut performance on the right of midfield and the team gelled well working the ball around effectively and holding strong in the face of a determined team.
It was disappointing that we went down just before half time, but the team did not allow their heads to fall and came back fighting, but could not convert a number of penalty corner opportunities despite coming close.
We came out after the break determined to work for each other, play our game and turn the screw on their defence.
The pressure paid off with Hari scoring a debut goal on the right post. The game continued to be close, and two goals came for either team, J Mallender converting well from a penalty corner and Brigg being awarded a flick after our centre back C Porter took a tumble in front of goal
A great opportunity to go ahead came from some selfless hockey from the two forwards on the field L Henderson and C Lewis passing deftly between each other cutting through the defence before narrowly missing from close range on the left post from a difficult angle.
Doncaster took the lead shortly after from a determined P Jessop to make the score 3:2
Brigg however were not finished, and the equaliser came seconds later from the push back with a scything skilful dribble from the half way line making the score 3:3. A red card for the home team came shortly after as a Doncaster team working well together frustrated the home team with great team work.
The defence held out against a determined apposition with W Ryland and Z Hall holding the wings and making strong tackles and timely interceptions to keep Brigg out. M Seaton made a number of good saves at the back to keep the ball out and keep us in the game.
The game finished 3:3 with some really strong performances form the young team against a physical and experienced Brigg. Top of the league Selby are the opposition next week.
