Men’s round up - 26/11/23

Ewan Whittaker28 Nov 2023 - 17:46

Read a round up of last weekend’s men’s results.

This weekend saw heavy defeats for both the first and second team as they both faced top sides in their leagues, respectively.
However, the third team comfortably beat University of Hull at the JSM Arena, this was then followed by a narrow win by the fourth team as they keep pushing for the top spot.
The fifth team put on a remarkable show, they put eight past Chapeltown which sees them climb into third.

Results:
M1 2-6 Timperley
M2 0-6 Durham City
M3 3-0 University of Hull
M4 3-2 Sheffield Bankers
M5 8-0 Chapeltown

M1: A big game in the Conference North as 2nd played 3rd, with half of the first-placed side (Lindum) in attendance on the sideline down at the John Marshall Arena. With Cresswell supplying the tunes, the warm-ups began and the Doncaster boys were up and about ready for the challenge....
The initial exchanges saw the two sides figuring each other out, with Timperley pouncing on a few Doncaster errors, but very rarely able to break the home side down from and outletting perspective. An early PCA put the home side in front - not my best, but they all count one don’t they? The visitors reacted well and were piling on the pressure, and eventually scored an equaliser after Doncaster failed to clear their lines.
What followed minutes later was a memorable moment for Ewan Whittaker, who, having turned 18 earlier in the week scored his maiden National League goal - and what a goal it was too. Whittaker managed to get to somewhat of a cross-field hospital pass from Sproul, shrugged off the pressing defender and made a pass forward. Not satisfied with just making the play and watching, he got on his bike and headed into the circle. With the ball coming loose on the right side of the goal near the baseline, Whittaker lifted home past the goalkeeper’s shoulder into the roof of the net to open his account. A well-timed goal just before HT to put Doncaster 2-1 up at the break.
The third quarter was game defining, and sadly where the game got away from Doncaster. Conceding 4 goals from minute 42 - 52, Timperley were devastating on the attack and proved too much for Doncaster to deal with. Somewhat shell shocked, there was a slight fightback from Doncaster in Q4, but the field goal attempts didn’t fall for us and the corners went wide.
Rather cruelly, Timperley scored a sixth with a PCA on the final whistle to really put the final nails in the coffin. No complaints or issues with the result - we were second best on the day. A humbling day for the Doncaster group, but one we will do our best to learn from.
We are nicely positioned at the half way point and have another opportunity this weekend as we take on Brooklands 2XI at home (Sunday, 2pm) to right the wrongs of our latest showing.

M2: The 2s made the long trip north to face league leaders Durham city looking to rectify the loss last time out.
A tough day lead to a 6-0 loss, to a much better Durham side on the day. However, it was a great effort from the boys especially E.brown and L.Goodwin making strong debuts, as well as another stand out performance from goalkeeper Doug.
The 2s will look to bounce back this week at home to Chesterfield.

M4: Men's 4 Report
Sheffield Uni Bankers 5th XI visited the JSM Arena looking to avenge last week's 1-0 defeat at the hands of the 4s.
Doncaster adopted a change in formation to plug the midfield that Sheffield Uni Bankers tried flooding previously, setting up in a 3-4-1-2 formation.
Doncaster repelled the Bankers attacks, and the first half looked like an end to end affair that was to yield no goals. However, very much like Doncaster last week, Bankers scored just before half-time from a short corner.
Half-time 0-1
Doncaster knew they were very much in the game but needed to score the next goal.
Doncaster came out for the second half with more intent, 10 mins in they won a short corner and Jak Hotchkiss deceived the visiting keeper with the pace of his "drag flick", the keeper defecting it into his goal rather than away from it.
1-1 and game on.
Doncaster continued to press high, forcing Bankers into silly mistakes and giving the ball away cheaply.
Doncaster won another short, the Bankers keeper saved the shot, the ball ballooned into the air, Fearn was in the right place to put the ball into the net on the volley.
Doncaster were in the ascendancy and went 3-1 up when the ball was transferred quickly from left to right, Stoves pressing into the D, shot for the top corner of the goal, Clover deflecting the ball passed the keeper.
Doncaster seemed in control until Bankers won another short corner that following several failed attempts to clear the ball was swept into the goal passed Baldwin-Hall.
The last 10 minutes was about game management, but Doncaster made hard work of it and Bankers very nearly scrapped a draw had it not been for Martin "Badger" Brown scampering along the goal line to keep the ball out deflecting the ball onto the post and away.
Doncaster v Bankers is always a close affair, and this was no different Doncaster completing the double over their local rivals.
Final Score 3-2

M5: Men's 5ths had a conceded game vs Chapeltown, who turned up nevertheless, with those available to play. 1 or 2 DHC players kindly helped them out.
The fifths played good positive hockey, with assistance from Max Davidson, and ran out 8-0 winners, with goals from Areeb (x2), Shaw, Max W (x3), Ollie W and Josiah, eventually getting his goal.
