Barnsley v M4
2 : 4
The 4th XI played their final game of the season (and the last under Alan Lockwood's captaincy) a month after the regular season had finished.
The fixture was a rearranged fixture from January, away at Barnsley, and this game was far from a dead rubber.
Barnsley had taken 3 points from their last 4 games whilst the 4s had managed to amass 10 points (of their 14) in their last 10.
Barnsley sat 3 points ahead of the 4s but had a worse goal difference by 3 goals.
The 4s needed to win to complete their Great Escape, and Barnsley could settle for a draw and survive.
Both sides had good support, each hoping their side would be victorious.
The game started at a frantic pace, end-to-end both sides trying to break the deadlock.
Unfortunately, it was Barnsley who drew first blood, their winger Massey putting the ball passed Dickerson in the Doncaster goal. The home support cheering loudly.
Doncaster tried to get straight back into the game, and the home keeper saved well from West and Fearn.
The best chance for Doncaster was from a sace from Fearn's shot, West trying to fire in the bouncing rebound, it narrowly going over the bar.
Half time 1-0 to Barnsley.
Skipper Lockwood insisted that the 4s played their game that had put them in with a chance of survival.
2 minutes into the second half, Fotheringham scored to liven up the away support.
The game started to settle down, and Doncaster looked to be tiring the hosts down, hoping to get their nose in front.
However, 50 minutes into the game, it was Barnsley who won a short corner and managed to score from it.
The home fans in captures, the away supporters stunned.
The 4th XI earlier in the season would have crumbled, but their renewed fight and vigour saw them hit the post through Fearn, the keeper beaten on his near post only for the ping of the post to ring loudly, the home side cheering and roaring every reprieve and clearance. Doncaster did draw level just before the hour mark, West calmly slipping the ball into the net.
This set up a tense last 10 minutes.
Fearn was looking jaded and came off for a rest, Whiteman, coming on to try and use fresh legs against the weary defenders.
Barnsley appeared to mass bodies behind the ball and a red wall was proving difficult to break down.
In a last throw of the dice, Lockwood sacrificed a defender to bring Fearn back on to go for broke.
3 minutes from time Fearn intercepted the ball 25 yards out, juggled the ball over a number of defenders sticks, breaking into the D and driving the ball on the half volley passed the home keeper who didn't move until it had already hit the back of the net.
The Doncaster supporters showed their appreciation for a special goal.
Barnsley had 3 minutes to salvage their season and tried to get the point they needed, but the resolute back 3 (J Potts, Brown and Young) managed to ward off the danger setting up a counter attack, Fearn setting West up to make it 4.
