Honorary life member - Steve Brooks

Balby born Steve, like many others began his hockey career at Doncaster Grammar School. He was the key component of the only school team to win a National title winning the under 16 championships in Coventry in 1982. A precocious talent he soon made his way into the club 1st team.
Unfortunately, his playing career was cut short by a serious knee injury which restricted him to only 44 National League appearances. However, his hockey knowledge was too good to go away from the sport and he became the 1st team coach, where he introduced a group of new young players into the National League squad. He also coached the Yorkshire senor side to County Championship success at St Albans in1992.
But Steve’s true vocation lay as an umpire. His understanding of player’s and man-management skills took him to the very top on the international stage. He umpired countless national finals indoors and out as well as international tournaments including the Champions Trophy. But his crowning glory was umpiring the final of the Commonwealth Games hockey tournament in Manchester 2002. Regrettably, soon after that Steve stopped umpiring, but he continues to be a vocal supporter at National League games despite his move to the other side of the Pennines.
