Roger was a fearsome, tough tackling defender in the 1st team in the 1970’s both indoors and out, and when he took his teeth out you know he meant business. He played a starring role in the Doncaster side to win the first official Yorkshire League in 1974/5.
After his playing days ended, his knowledge of the game lent itself to coaching and he took on coaching the men’s 1st team, introducing young players into the team and giving them huge self-belief with his relaxed, supportive style. He also served as a Yorkshire selector for many years and his counsel was always very much sought after.
He then became a key figure, along with wife Sheila, in the development of the junior section of the club and expanded that by captaining a team at the lower end of the club to introduce junior players to senior hockey, in a forerunner of what is now known as the Badgers team.
One of the players to benefit from this team was his young 2nd son, Barry, who has gone on to become England and Great Britain’s most capped international player, who many would argue is the country’s greatest ever player. As the saying goes the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!
