An illness and injury hit Doncaster Ladies 1’s team made the journey across the M62 to an unbeaten Chester side on Saturday for an early push back.
With some shifting around of personnel, the task was always going to be a tough one, with rotations being less sporadic than usual due to the depleted squad numbers.
The game started brightly, and Doncaster showed their usual passing flair and creativity throughout the side, quickly adapting to the home side’s high, full press from set plays. The confidence shown to transfer the ball throughout the team was clear, and it reaped its rewards as Chester soon began to look stretched across the pitch, with Doncaster taking full advantage and gaining several short corners and more possession higher up the pitch.
Although Chester were relying heavily on the long ball, they did manage to penetrate the Doncaster line on more than one occasion, and fantastic ‘keeping from Steph Lonyon kept Doncaster in the game.
An injury to Charlotte Dodds up front meant a debut for Annabel ‘Bennie’ Bennet came earlier than planned in the pre match team talk, but a fearless Annabel stepped up to the task brilliantly, making fantastic leads and really stretching the pitch, with Chester players really struggling to keep up with her pace.
Goals from Millie Milton, a first league goal from Fiona Bolland and a well taken debut goal from Annabel Bennett sealed the game at 3-0
Chester did pull a consolation goal back a couple of minutes before the end, as injuries picked up during the game began to take their toll on several players, but a well deserved victory, and results elsewhere gives Doncaster a 5 point lead heading into next weekend – a home match against nearest table rivals Kirby Stephen – hopefully another cracking match to come!!
