A report of the weekend 10/11 February games

Mixed fortunes this weekend for our ladies' & men's 1st teams. We also welcomed gold medal winning Olympian Sam Quek on Sunday who wholeheartedly supported our new pitch fund (see pic). Here's my report.

LADIES' 1st TEAM
Doncaster Ladies' 1s had another double header this weekend. On Saturday they faced Durham University Ladies 2s. The girls put on an impressive display, and through a quick break down the left, Holly Brown scored their 1st goal on the 3rd minute of the game. Doncaster dominated the play and demonstrated some great passages of play. Amelia Milton converted their 2nd goal through a short corner on the 10th minute. Doncaster entered the 2nd half 3-0 up, Ruth Thomas scoring another short corner.

Durham were much stronger in the 2nd half, and managed to claw one back. Durham had some great passages of play, but weren’t able to change the score line. The game ended 3-1 to Doncaster.

On Sunday Doncaster hosted Bowdon Hightown in the England Hockey Cup. Bowdon are in the National Premier League, and field Rio GB star Sam Quek. Doncaster stood their ground and demonstrated a great defensive display. Bowdon had the majority of possession, but Doncaster were hard to break down. Bowdon scored their 1st goal on the 28th minute. 0Doncaster still stood strong. The girls had some attacking opportunities but were unable to break down the strong Bowdon defence. Doncaster held their ground and withstood sustained periods of pressure. A nice short corner routine from Bowdon took the scoreline to 2-0. Doncaster Ladies showed great grit a determination in a tough game.

Sam Quek spoke with young hockey fans at the hockey club, signing autographs and taking photos.

MEN'S 1st TEAM
Doncaster Hockey Club’s Men’s 1st Team slumped to a disappointing 3 – 1 home defeat against bottom side Preston and now find themselves in real relegation trouble with 6 games of the season remaining.

Doncaster were without defensive lynchpin Tom Brickman and struggled to get into any rhythm against their Lancashire opponents. Preston took the lead on the 19th minute when Julian Lopez fired home their first penalty corner.

Doncaster’s cause wasn’t helped early in the second half when Travis Cresswell was sinbinned for 10 minutes after a challenge on the visitor’s goalkeeper, and Preston capitalised immediately when Nick Jeffs took advantage of a rare Pete Bartlett error. Doncaster reduced the arrears almost immediately when Josh Oades pounced on a penalty corner rebound.

It seemed like an equaliser was inevitable but the Preston goal led a charmed life and chances went begging time and again and typically Preston broke away in the final minute for Steven Masterson to seal the victory.

Doncaster travel to Deeside this Sunday only 2 places above the relegation places knowing that defeat will likely see them drop into one of these positions.
